Video: This is probably the best last lap ever

While that's largely down to the almost ludicrous number of cars currently competing for the top prize in the World Endurance Championship, that's not the only place currently thriving in this new era of closed cockpit prototype racing.

Over in the US, the IMSA Sportscar Championship might not boast quite as many cars as the WEC has managed, but its racing has been, if anything, even more intense. Thanks to a well-managed Balance of Performance the cars – which compete in the GTP class – are all very closely matched. 

A perfect example of this, is the last lap of the recent race at Road America. A race where not one or two brands were in the hunt for victory right at the end of the race, but three. Yes, three different brands and six different cars. Two from Porsche, two from Cadillac and a couple of Acuras thrown into the mix.

It's a proper fight, too, with a little bit of bumping and some really good racing as the GTP cars fight through the slower GT3 machines. Heart-in-the-mouth stuff and a great showcase of why multi-class racing is the best thing in the world.
