Video: NASCAR Indy masterclass cutting through the field

NASCAR is a more technical, strategic, cloak-and-dagger sport in terms of the driving than anyone really gives it credit for. Like astronauts lining up their craft for a perfect orbital slingshot, it’s all about setting up your line, planning your moment, and hoping the cars ahead synchronise with your plan of attack. And what we have here today, is a masterclass in that process, courtesy of Shane Van Gisbergen at Indianapolis.

The way he cuts his line, manages the throttle, carries his momentum, uses the draft, and picks his battles is masterful. In his mind’s eye, amid the maelstrom of cars ahead, there was a clear path to progress. The result: climbing up the order like a 200mph ladder, running up to a fourth-place finish from his 23rd-place starting position.
