Video: Hyundai Ioniq 5 N sets electric production record at Pikes Peak

This is a slightly strange video. It’s an onboard view of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N’s record-breaking run at the 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, but we’ve become so conditioned to the sound of an engine roaring its way up the world’s most famous hill that listening to nothing but the sound of the wind takes almost the full 10:49.267 run to get used to.

We’d forgive you in fact for choosing to watch this one on mute, because the main attraction of this video is the run itself, which we get a great view of from the top of the windscreen of this Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

The car itself is production spec, albeit supplemented by performance software geared specifically towards Pikes Peak, and driven by rookie Ron Zaras, setting a new electric production SUV record for the 12.42-mile course.

Just by looking at the numbers, it’s easy to see how a car like this could be so fast. A pair of electric motors develop 650PS (478kW) and 770Nm (568lb ft) of torque for a 0-62mph time of 3.4 seconds. Power is transmitted through an electronic limited slip differential and torque distribution can be balanced between both axles for optimum performance into and out of corners.

The results are unsurprising, and you can see from this video how quickly the Ioniq 5 N gets up to speed, bursting out of every turn with unabashed vigour. For any car to set a sub-11-minute time at Pikes Peak is impressive stuff, so to see Hyundai’s 2.2-tonne SUV complete a run like this is deserving of praise.
