Video: How to go from 25th position to 1st place in just 12 laps
This is a prime example of how you don’t want a race to start; being squeezed into a 100mph spin by two encroaching cars – and that’s before even reaching turn one of lap one.
The incident, which remarkably didn’t destroy this driver’s car, sent him straight to 25th place in the 33-car field. But what’s even more remarkable is the driver’s recovery up the grid.
Behind the wheel of a Spec Racer Ford in a race back in May 2014, the driver painstakingly pushes to recapture lost ground, advancing past 13 cars in the first lap alone, before struggling on to first place in just 12 laps. Twelve laps.
In the caption for this 23-minute long video, even the driver admits that he is surprised, commenting: “My car suffered a fair amount of cosmetic damage (still working on it) but surprisingly was drivable. After that, it was just a question of ‘how far back up through the field can I get?’. With national champion level drivers at the front of the pack, I surprised even myself with the results.” The video even comes complete with cartoon bubble thought captions.
