MotoGP champion Marc Márquez and Honda extend contract until 2024

Marc Márquez has extended his contract with the Honda Racing Corporation for another four years, the factory team has announced.

In his eighth year aboard the manufacturer’s RC213V, the 27-year-old has decided to remain with the team until ‘at least’ 2024. The announcement comes just months after the team signed his younger brother Alex – a move which is thought to have influenced his decision.

In 2013, the then reigning Moto2 champion Márquez debuted in the MotoGP class, immediately making his mark and becoming the youngest MotoGP world champion in history. In 2014, he took the first 10 rounds, then three more, once again securing the title. Despite losing out on the 2015 title to veterans Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, Márquez has won four consecutive titles since 2016, bringing his career total to 62 pole positions and 56 victories – making him, in that respect, the third most successful rider in MotoGP history.

Following the announcement, the Spaniard commented: “I am very proud to announce my renewal with Honda Racing Corporation for the next four years.

“Honda gave me the opportunity to arrive in the MotoGP class with a factory bike in 2013. Since the first year we have achieved success together and I am very happy to continue being part of the Honda family. HRC gives me the confidence to extend this partnership to obtain our common goal and continue our story of success.”

HRC President Yoshishige Nomura added: “We are happy to announce that, after the end of the current season, Marc will stay in the Honda family for four more years.

“We started talking a few months ago, as both parties wanted to stay together and continue winning. Marc started his career in the premier class in 2013 and with him, we have won six of the last seven MotoGP titles. As a unique champion, he deserves a unique deal. I am very confident in this partnership and I wish everyone involved continued success.”
