Mercedes-AMG One smashes own production car record at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife

DTM driver Maro Engel got behind the wheel to take Merc's F1 car for the road around the famous 12.9-mile course in 6 minutes and 9.090 seconds.

Engel said: "Two years ago, the conditions were not ideal, and some sections of the track were still a little damp. We knew we could do more, and we wanted to show that. Today, we were able to demonstrate the maximum potential of the AMG One. Many thanks to the whole team from Affalterbach for the trust they've placed in me. It was a great pleasure and honour to be able to drive this record lap with such a unique car."

The length of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife presented unique challenges to the One's F1-inspired hybrid system, Engel using "lift and coast" to recuperate maximum energy in braking zones before releasing it back to its four wheels for full-bore acceleration on the straights.

In fairness, the One's latest achievement should come as no surprise; this fiendishly complex supercar produces a phenomenal 1,063PS (782kW) and is limited to a top speed of 219mph. Its spec list reads like an F1 driver's Christmas list and includes a carbon monocoque tub, an engine and transmission that work as a stressed chassis member, pushrod suspension and active aero. 

Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Mercedes‑AMG GmbH, added: "We've held the record for road vehicles for almost two years now. But at AMG, we always want to push the boundaries of what is possible to the maximum or even push them a little further. That's why we have once again demonstrated what is possible with the unique AMG One.

“The entire team has been rewarded for its efforts and commitment. I'm proud of this determined team effort and of this fantastic record time. Once again, we've impressively demonstrated the spirit and expertise of AMG."

Replicating the time in your One (can but dream) is simple. Select Race Plus mode – which ramps up the downforce, stiffens the suspension and drops the car's (already low ride height) by another 37mm at the front and 30mm at the back – and you're good to go. Happy lapping!
