The Fox-body Mustang – the one produced between 1979 and 1993 – has been a bit of a sleeper hit in recent years for people looking for cheap, easily upgradeable power.
Well it’s not going to be a fox flying under the radar any longer as it looks like it may be Ken Block’s ride of choice for his next Gymkhana outing.
The Hoonifox has been created as a digital concept by Ash Thorp, the designer behind Ken Block’s Escort Cosworth V2 and the new Batmobile. You can watch the designer explain his creation here.
The humble hatchback Fox has been given an extreme makeover that includes huge WRC-style squared-off wheelarch flares covering massive five-spoke star-design alloy wheels, a side-exit exhaust, enormous ducktail spoiler and louvres, lots and lots of louvres.
The latter might offer a clue as to the next Gymkhana instalment; apparently Ken Block is keen to do an '80s-themed episode and wants to film it in Miami. Expect to see pastel-coloured racesuits with rolled up sleeves and the Hoonifox doing doughnuts around a white Ferrari Testarossa.
The Hoonifox is said to have a rally-spec all-wheel-drive system but what actually provides motive power to the wheels is undecided. The current shortlist includes a Ford Ecoboost V6 as seen in the Hoonitruck, a Roush Yates built V8 or even the electric powertrain from the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
We hope to see the Hoonifox at a future Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard but in the meantime, check out our video comparing Ken Block and Mad Mike’s styles on the Goodwood Hill.
