Ferrari has given us our latest glimpse at its upcoming Le Mans Hypercar, due to take the Prancing Horse back to La Sarthe and the top level of endurance racing for the first time in 50 years.

Even in this darkened shady image, we can see the liberties that the LMH class affords in terms of design by comparison to the LMDh class, which builds off a stock hybrid system and LMP2 chassis. The Ferrari features an enormous rear wing with highly prominent leg elements at the sides and in the middle – a very different approach to Peugeot with the wingless 9X8. At the front, the extended splitter that’s curved up in the middle is evident, as are the blade-like running lights seen on the previous teaser

All in all, its a very serious-looking bit of kit and anyone thinking this would be a return of the 312, 512, P3-style ‘60s and ‘70s prototype form will get a shock. Ferrari is properly back with a bonafide prototype. Now marks the beginning of testing for the Ferrari LMH car, which has already been seen in disguise running around Fiorano. The road to Le Mans 2023 begins. In the meantime, we fully expect to see this car named and shorn of its disguise before the year is out.

“This is a very exciting moment, eagerly awaited both by the people who worked on this project and Ferrari fans,” said Antonello Coletta, Head of Ferrari Attività Sportive GT.

“Being able to touch the result of many months of work, planning, and simulations gives us new energy and motivation. We are proud of what we have achieved, and although the LMH’s masking during testing hides the car’s volumes and styling, I think it is undeniably recognisable as a Ferrari.”
