BTCC drops hybrid in favour of sustainable fuels for 2025

The British Touring Car Championship has announced it will introduce 100 per cent sustainable fuel for 2025, discontinuing the use of hybrid power in the process.

The decision to move to sustainable fuels sees the BTCC become the first championship in the UK to fully adopt fossil-free fuels for all competing cars. The fuel has been rigorously tested and developed by the series, with positive results. Following a full assessment and consultation, the decision was made to introduce the fuels from the start of the 2025 season and end the use of hybrid power.

The new fuel is 100 per cent fossil-free, with all components derived from synthetic and biological sources. Designated ‘Hiperflo ECO102 R100’, the fuel has been engineered to maximise performance, compatibility and sustainability and conforms to the highest FIA and ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) compliances.

Hybrid power had been used in the BTCC since 2022, with improving results up to this season, where it added a tactical element to the races to great effect. Cars will continue to enjoy a power-boost output in 2025, with the same deployment format as used in 2024, but with the additional power coming solely via turbo boost. The removal of the hybrid system will mean cars lose 55kg of weight, improving their nimbleness as a result.

In another tweak to the rules, the boost deployment will no longer be available to teams and drivers via timing screens in a bid to cut down on teams being able to use this to their advantage. LED lights on the side windows of the cars and on the live TV graphics will continue to inform fans who is using the boost at which time.

“The introduction of 100 per cent fossil free sustainable fuel for 2025 shows that the BTCC remains committed to innovation in motorsport,” said BTCC Chief Executive, Alan Gow. “As the highest profile championship in the UK, this introduction is a significant and essential step in maintaining the competitiveness and excitement synonymous with the BTCC, but in a more sustainable and forward-thinking way.

“The hybrid era was a great one for the BTCC. Six years ago, when we first announced hybrid, it was a technology still in its relative infancy within motorsport. We’ve successfully completed that programme – and really have no more to prove in that respect – whilst others have yet to catch up. But, as we’ve now ticked that box we can move further forward with the introduction of the fossil-free sustainable fuel, whilst very importantly delivering the same performance parameters that made this year’s BTCC such a memorable one.”

Further changes to the regulations for the 2025 season have been ratified by TOCA, with these changes expected to be released in the coming days.
