On the 27th of April the Yas Marina Circuit will host the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, or A2RL, billed as a “new era of extreme sports entertainment” featuring Super Formula racing cars driven by AI.

It’s hoped the new event can serve as a platform for R&A allowing researchers to test and refine algorithms and systems in the heat of battle. Organisers say the event is an opportunity for competitors to stress test their autonomous vehicles, but could also inspire a new generation into AI, while accelerating Abu Dahbi as an AI hub exploring new possibilities in the field.

Built by Italian company, Dallara, the Super Formula cars are packed to the hilt with cameras, radar, lidar and computer processing power, rolled along by a 2.0-litre turbocharged Honda engine mated to a six-speed gearbox. A Dallara EAV24 chassis made from bio-composite materials is the car’s backbone with pushrod suspension, Brembo brakes and Yokohama Advan tyres.

Competing teams come from the likes of China and the USA, Hungary, Switzerland and Germany and the event is still open to new entrants. If the event is a success it could spawn new autonomous racing events racing everything from dune buggies to drones.
