2025 Formula E drivers and teams

15th October 2024
Simon Ostler

The build-up to Season 11 of Formula E is already in full swing just days after the finale of the 2024 championship in London. Drivers and teams are wasting little time in getting their preparations in order ahead of the arrival of the new Gen3 Evo cars set to make their debut in 2025.

We’ve already had a number of driver announcements from teams throughout the grid, and we’re also eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new powertrain manufacturer to join the fray. We’ll keep you up to date with all of the updates as they happen as the driver line-ups for Formula E in 2025 are formed.

ERT becomes Kiro Race Co for Season 11

The Forest Road Company has completed a 100 per cent acquisition of the ERT Formula E team, and will rebrand as Kiro Race Co for Season 11 of the Formula E world championship.

In a huge boost for the team, it has also been confirmed that it will run with Porshce powertrains from the 2024/25 season after struggling with its own in-house ERT units in 2024.

Kiro Race Co continues the legacy of the original Team China Racing that started the first ever Formula E race back in 2014, and won the inaugural championship with Nelson Piquet Jr.

Forest Road will be hoping a fresh injection of funding and championship-winning powertrains will help its new team return to the front of the grid sooner rather than later. We'll await word on whether drivers Dan Ticktum and Sergio Sette Camara will remain with the team.

Zane Maloney joins Lola for 2025

Updated: Wednesday 25th September. Lola Yamaha ABT has announced that 20-year-old Zane Maloney will complete the team’s driver line-up for the 2025 Formula E season.

The driver from Barbados will team up with veteran Lucas di Grassi for his rookie season as Lola fields the ultimate youth and experience combo. A British Formula 4 champion and Formula 3 runner up, the Sauber junior is currently racing in Formula 2 where he sits third in the drivers’ standings, and will graduate to Formula E to continue his journey up the motorsport ladder.

Maloney has racked up extensive experience in a Formula E cockpit as Andretti’s reserve and development driver, so a move to a full race seat with Lola is a logical next step. He’s already begun testing with his new team in Varano, and will continue his development in the new Gen3 Evo car in Valencia when Formula E carries out its official pre-season test.

“I am delighted to be part of the Lola Yamaha ABT team and looking forward to this exciting challenge,” Maloney said. “Although I already know the championship well, this is a completely new chapter for me, so working with such an experienced team, and alongside such a successful driver, is the perfect next step.

“I’ve followed and admired Lucas’ battles over the past seasons, including when he became champion. I’m sure that I will learn a lot from him and together we will push both ourselves and the development of the car forward.”

Till Bechtolsheimer, Chairman of Lola Cars Ltd. said: “We’re delighted to welcome Zane to the team for the upcoming Formula E season, completing our driver pairing as one of the most exciting on next season’s grid.

“Zane is a hugely talented young driver with an abundance of speed and potential and, alongside Lucas, we have an ideal combination of youth and experience. Zane has demonstrated his abilities in a variety of junior categories and proven himself as a race winner, and we’re looking forward to seeing him get behind the wheel in testing, and then at round one in São Paulo.”

Buemi Frijns Envision Formula E 2025 01.jpg

Buemi and Frijns remain with Envision for 2025

Updated: Thursday 19th September. 2023 Formula E teams champions Envision will retain its driver line-up for the upcoming 2025 season. The 2016 drivers champion and three-time runner up Sébastien Buemi will once again partner with Robin Frijns, who took his two Formula E victories with the Envision Virgin team back in 2019.

Together they form one of the most experienced driver pairings on the Formula E grid for Season 11, but the team will be hoping for a return to its championship-winning form after a difficult 2024 campaign.

Envision will retain the Jaguar powertrain for 2025, and Sylvain Filippi, Managing Director & CTO of Envision Racing, said: “It's great to have continuity in our driver line-up as Sébastien and Robin lead us into Season 11. Despite Season 10 not being our strongest year, we are confident that the momentum we gained in the closing rounds can be taken into next season and put us back where we want to be.”

Frijns and Buemi scored three podiums between them in the final four races of the 2024 season, momentum they’ll look to carry into the opening round in São Paulo.

Buemi said: “As a team, we improved significantly towards the end of last season to get back to the front of the grid, and the results showed this. We will continue to push to ensure that we head to Sao Paulo with the same level of competitiveness.”

Robin Frijns added: “I started off Season 10 relatively strong, with a podium in round three, however it took some time to adjust to the new car and style of racing. We worked extremely hard to make that adjustment and by the end were fighting at the front again, so our focus now is on continuing that into next season.”

Nato replaces Fenestraz at Nissan

Updated: Thursday 12th September. Norman Nato will replace Sacha Fenestraz at the Nissan Formula E team for Season 11. Nato has raced for Nissan before – having been with the team in 2022/23 – but moved to Andretti for the 2023/24 season after being replaced by Oliver Rowland. The Frenchman, who also races in the World Endurance Championship with Jota, managed one podium last season, struggling to match his World Champion team-mate Jake Dennis. But his performances were enough to finish above former team-mate Fenestraz who finished a disappointing 17th in the championship without a single podium while Rowland was fourth with two wins.

Speaking of the move, Nato said: “I’m really happy to be back with the team. We ended Season 9 strongly together and I’m looking to pick up where we left off. We will be aiming to perform straight away, so the fact I know the car and the team will be helpful. Oli proved how quick he is last season; we’ve been battling on track since Formula Renault 2.0 but never been teammates!

“I’m sure we will get along well and hopefully we can share some podiums together. It will be interesting to see how the car has improved, and the goal is clear. We want to win races and championships. Finally, I wish Sacha all the best, he’s a top guy and it’s never easy to replace someone you previously partnered with. I’m sure we will be racing each other again very soon.”

Taylor Barnard joins Bird at McLaren for 2025

Updated: Wednesday 28th August. McLaren reserve and development driver Taylor Barnard has been promoted by the team, partnering Sam Bird in their driver line-up for the 2025 Formula E season. He replaces Jake Hughes whose departure was announced at the end of July after two seasons with McLaren.

Barnard has experience in Formula E, having filled in at the last minute for an injured Bird at the Monaco E-Prix and Berlin E-Prix, where at the latter he became the youngest points-scorer aged 19, with a tenth-place finish in Race 1, which he followed up by finishing eighth in Race 2. Barnard also competed in Formula 2 with AIX Racing in 2024, taking a dramatic maiden victory at the Monte Carlo sprint race.

“I am delighted to be racing for the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team in Season 11," said Barnard. "In Season 10, I was the team’s Reserve and Development Driver and during that time I learnt a lot, putting my new knowledge into practice in Monaco and Berlin.

“I am excited to race alongside Sam this season, and I am sure I will learn a lot from him. He is one of the most experienced drivers on the grid, and I hope that together we can score plenty of points and collect some trophies for the team.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to be able to continue the journey with the team as full-time Formula E driver, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Muller to Andretti FE 2025 copy.jpg

Müller to replace Nato at Andretti

Updated: Tuesday 13th August. Nico Müller has joined Andretti for the 2025 season, replacing the outgoing Norman Nato. Müller spent two seasons with the ABT Formula E team, where he achieved six points finishes overall, including a strong end to the 2024 season which saw him rack up four consecutive points finishes across the final two rounds. The Swiss driver had been linked to a move to Porsche, having conducted private testing with the German marque earlier in the year, but instead will join 2023 champion Jake Dennis at Andretti.

The man he replaces, Norman Neto, spent only one season at Andretti, achieving one podium and finished the season five points behind Müller in the standings.

“I’m very excited to join the Andretti Formula E team,” Müller said. “It’s a team that has seen success from the very beginning of the championship, particularly in the Gen3 era in their partnership with Porsche Motorsport.

“To work with Jake [Dennis], a former world champion is an honour, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity. I’m going to give it my very best to contribute to the team’s success and hopefully aim for some podiums and my first Formula E win – that's the target. I can't wait to get going.”

Michael Andretti, CEO of Andretti said: “We have high expectations for season 11, and we’re confident that adding a driver of Nico’s calibre will help us get results.

“His experience and success in Formula E, and numerous other highly respected racing series, will be key as we continue to increase the depth of our driver roster. We’re looking forward to seeing what Nico can do as we continue our pursuit of wins and world championships.”

Which drivers are confirmed for Formula E in 2025?

As it stands eight teams have confirmed their complete driver line-ups for Season 11.

Teams’ champions Jaguar have retained their two drivers, Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy, who both came painfully close to winning the drivers’ championship in London. The pair took 14 podiums including four victories in 2024, and will be back for more in ’25.

Elsewhere, Maserati has rung the changes with an all-new line-up, DS Penske outcast Stoffel Vandoorne will join up with former McLaren man Jake Hughes, while Maximilian Günther moves away from Maserati to fill Vandoorne’s seat at DS alongside Jean-Éric Vergne.

Porsche have unsurprisingly kept on the reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein after his dramatic title win in the final laps of the season. António Félix da Costa also silenced his critics in style to retain his seat with a flurry of wins in the final third of the season.

Mahindra meanwhile will be hoping that consistency will aid in their struggle for performance as Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara, in theory an incredibly strong driver pairing, remain in situ for 2025.

McLaren will be relying on a mixture of youth and experience, having promoted reserve driver Taylor Barnard to partner Sam Bird in 2025, replacing Jake Hughes.

Oliver Rowland has also confirmed he is set to remain at Nissan after a strong first season with the team, where he will be joined by Norman Nato, returning to Nissan after spending last season with Andretti.

The now de-throned 2023 world champion Jake Dennis remains locked in to his multi-year deal at Andretti, joined by new team-mate Nico Müller, while the new Abt Lola partnership has also confirmed that Lucas di Grassi will continue to race with the team.

Which drivers do not have Formula E contracts for 2025?

ERT are the only team yet to confirm any of their drivers for the 2025 Formula E season. The likes of Jehan Daruvala, Dan Ticktum, Sergio Sette Camara, and Sacha Fenestraz are all awaiting word of what the future holds for their respective careers.

Then we have the likes of Paul Aron and Caio Collet who each made their debuts in Formula E last season. With spaces still remaining on the grid for next season, there are opportunities for some new names to emerge in Season 11.

Are there any new teams in Formula E?

The Abt Lola team will be making its debut with the new Gen3 Evo cars in 2025 taking the place of what was Abt Cupra. The Lola-Yamaha partnership is developing its new powertrain to become the seventh supplier on the grid.
