Sergio Perez is to enter into the new all-electric boat racing series, E1, in the UIM E1 World Championship. The Mexican F1 race winner and current Red Bull Racing ace will be the face of the new Team Mexico outfit.
The electric RaceBird boats will be resplendent in Checo’s home flag, with the team taking one of a maximum of 12 spots on the grid when the series gets underway in 2023. Perez is a friend of E1 co-founder Alejandro Agag, who he raced under with the Barwa Addax GP2 team in 2010.
“I’m really excited at the prospect of becoming a new team owner in E1 and having a team representing Mexico in the UIM E1 World Championship,” Perez said.
“Given my relationship with Alejandro, I’ve kept a close eye on what he’s been doing and his various championships, and I think what he’s achieved with promoting more sustainable forms of motorsport is commendable. Seeing a racing team flying the flag for Mexico on a global stage will be amazing and I cannot wait to watch the RaceBird in action for the first time. I’ve heard lots of positive stories about the boat and the exciting sporting product E1 is trying to create for fans with city events.
“For sure this will be a great challenge in my career and a learning experience. I’m looking forward to getting started and helping to grow the fan base in Mexico and around the world.”
The first two seasons are set to in effect be a ‘one make’ series, with all teams getting an all-electric RaceBird hydrofoil boat. After this, providing the series gets traction, regulations will open up to allow teams to develop their own hardware and electric tech.
With the 2023 inaugural season looming, we can expect many more announcements soon regarding teams and the calendar, which is expected to take the series to waterways all over the world.
