Ferrari has given us our first look at the GT3 racing version of its new 296 GTB supercar with this concept. The finished article will take over from the ageing 488 in the GT3 class. The 296 GT3 will mark a switchover in collaboration, from Michelotti with whom the 488 was developed. Instead, Oreca will be taking over for the 296.

While a de-tuned version of the new 663PS (487kW) 120-degree twin-turbo V6 engine from the 296 GTB road car will carry over, the hybrid elements will not, in accordance with GT3 technical regulations.

The future racer is in development now and will be hitting the track in the coming months, ahead of its race debut in 2023. The GTE variant of the 488, which the 296 will effectively be replacing along with the 488 GT3, debuted at the Daytona 24 Hours, so a January 2023 debut at the American enduro is likely for the 296 GT3.

In terms of design, it’s as you’d expect. Accentuated aero elements including an enormous spoiler, arch vents and a monster splitter join blistered bodywork to clothe familiar 296 elements, with that 250 LM-seque hip line immaculately preserved.

The illustrations we’ve seen so far are of a black car with a black background, so in spite of the car being in full view, there’s much still to be revealed. From what we’ve seen so far, it should be a stunner. Whether it can carry on the 488’s winning ways remains to be seen.
