Updated: 2021 Formula E calendar

20th June 2020
Seán Ward

The FIA has updated the provisional 2020-21 Formula E calendar, the first time for which the series will be ackowledged as a FIA world championship for the very first time.

While some were highly critical of the series when it was launched in 2014, with a few bumps along the way it has been proven to be a top level championship, some truly great drivers racing for electric glory over the years. Competition is fierce, and the racing being confined to mostly city streets many people who had not been exposed to motorsport before have now fallen in love with the sport.

Update: E-Prix Puebla double-header gets a layout

Updated 17:00 Monday 14th June 2021. The preparations for the first-ever Mexican E-Prix to be hosted at Autodromo Miguel E. Abed near Puebla are underway. Now, the layout for the races has been revealed, featuring an “attack mode activation zone”.

This is an extended hairpin area at turn eight that acts as a kind of ‘Joker’, that’s longer. The cars will however have a 35kW power boost that’s to be activated. Besides this, the circuit deviates from the ‘05-’09 WTCC layout at turn three, where instead of running out onto the end bowl to the right, drivers will arc left into a hairpin following an infield layout until turn six where the touring car configuration resumes. In all the circuit is around 3km in length and has 15 turns. Rounds eight and nine of the ABB Formula E World Championship will take place here, on 19th and 20th June 2021.

Updated: Formula E 2021 calendar overhauled

Updated 17:00 Thursday 28th January. The 2021 Formula E calendar has been updated, with a number of small changes being made for the coming eight dates. The two late-February dates in Saudi Arabia remain on the 26th and 27th, as does the 10th April date in Rome, Italy.

The next event, penned for the 24th April in Paris, has now been postponed until Season 8. In its place there will be a new race in a new place, Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain. The circuit will use a new configuration especially for Formula E.

Monaco remains on 8th May, however the race in Seoul, South Korea’s capital, originally set for 23rd May, has been postponed, with more details to follow. In its place will be a round in Marrakesh at Moulay El Hassan on 22nd May. Finally, while originally TBC, dates of 5th and 6th June have been confirmed in Santiago, for a Chilean double-header.

“We are committed to delivering a global calendar that befits our first season as a World Championship,” said Jamie Reigle, Chief Executive Officer of Formula E.

"We are working closely with all our partners across teams, manufacturers, sponsors, broadcasters and host cities to adapt to external circumstances and ensure the health and safety of everyone involved. We will do so while maintaining what fans love most about Formula E: unpredictable racing, iconic locations and the blend of the real and virtual worlds, all underpinned by our race for better futures.”

Update: China and Mexico Formula E races cancelled

Updated 12:30pm Wednesday 21st October 2020. In the first coronavirus blow to the 2021 motorsport season two of Formula E’s 2020-2021 season races have been ‘indefinitely postponed’ due to the ongoing uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The races, in Mexico City and Sanya, have been removed for the timebeing from the Formula E calendar, with the opening weekend in Santiago, Chile, now being boosted to a double-header to make up for the missing Mexico race. The Chilean race will now also be held behind closed doors and Formula E bosses are hoping that fans will be allowed into the following double-header in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, in late February.

"Formula E will continue to work with local authorities to monitor the situation and is in constant communication with its community of teams, manufacturers, partners, broadcasters and drivers," a series statement read. "The next set of races will be confirmed in early 2021." All calendar updates are subject to approval of the FIA World Motor Sport Council.
