Video: The six craziest Dakar moments

05th January 2021

The Dakar Rally is a wild rodeo of chance. And that’s why we love it… For forty years now, motorsport fans have poured over the limited coverage of each event, grasping at any opportunity to live vicariously through the intrepid competitors, from the comfort of their own sofas.

While talent and endurance are high on the list of required attributes, so too is luck, with competitors annually being caught out by the terrain, weather and navigational challenges. As we detailed in this list last year, no race is without chaos, and in some cases, disaster.

Take five this morning and join Red Bull in reliving some of the crazy moments that have befallen competitors since the Rally’s inception in 1979, from Ari Vatanen’s ransomed Peugeot 205 T16 to 1988’s Algerian Hell Stage and later Carlos Sainz’ navigational mishap that ended his 2009 race.

Welcome to Goodwood Elevenses, a mid-morning helping of motoring-related amusement to help break up your day. Watch the last video: WRC 2020 best bits
