Video: The howl of the Ferrari 333 SP’s V12

It’s one of the hottest helmet cams we’ve seen for a while and we can’t get enough. The bright yellow of the car against the brilliant blue sky sets the scene long before we’ve even hit play, and it only gets infinitely better from there.

Our protagonist is none other than the Ferrari 333 SP, with its heaving 4.0-litre V12. Derived from the engine with which the Ferrari 641 won six races in the 1990 F1 championship, it’s a weapon in it’s own right, and with a reported 650 horses flying out at a sky-high 11,000rpm, it sure as hell is rapid.

While not matching its predecessor’s fame and fortune, the 333 SP certainly had its moments. Contesting the IMSA GT Championship, it saw the spotlight in 1995 – its second year on the grid. Taking five wins including the 12 Hours of Sebring, the 333 SP secured Ferrari the makes championship, while drivers Fermín Vélez, Mauro Baldi and Wayne Taylor took first, third and fourth in the drivers’ championship respectively. As its career came to a close towards the end of the ‘90s, the 333 SP reminded fans that it wasn’t dead yet with a win at the 1998 Daytona 24 Hours.

Ferrari also entered it in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in period, however it was uncompetitive, recording a best finish of sixth in 1997. That said, it looks pretty quick here, on track at the 2018 Le Mans Classic. Terrifyingly quick, in fact…
