Red Bull vs Mercedes, Williams vs McLaren, the great F1 rivalries are untold in number. But it all started in Formula 1’s earliest days, with Lotus, Ferrari and Maserati. And 70 years on at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix, that original battle comes back to life.
At the front the Ferrari 246 Dino stormed off with Marino Franchitti chasing in the Maserati 250F. Claudia Huertgen however had a stranglehold on the race, stretching out a lead that couldn’t be eaten into. The Maserati and Ferrari roared around and before long were finding back markers. The battle for third was a great fight between a 250F and a Lotus 16, with the Tec-Mec Maserati watching on.
