The touring cars of the 1980s are special; they represent an era of timeless car design and tend to be powered by sonorous engines that send tingles down the spine. That’s certainly the case with this Alfa Romeo GTV6 that we’re riding onboard with in today’s video.
Seen here racing at the Winton Festival of Speed, with Trent Harrison at the wheel, we get an excellent POV of what it’s like to drive this stunning Group A tin top. These racing versions of the GTV6 benefitted from a bored out 2.9-litre V6 engine producing 176PS (130kW) at 5,800rpm, and above all the sound it produces is utterly sublime.
It raced primarily in the Australian Touring Car Championship, with 1980 Formula 1 world champion Alan Jones among its list of drivers. It was a regular contender at the front of the field, and 1975 Australian Touring Car Champion Colin Bond drove it to a class victory at the 1985 Bathurst 1000.
From what we can see from this onboard footage, the GTV6 looks like a delightful car to drive. It’s compliant and balanced under braking, and picks up the revs so sweetly on the exits, we would dearly love to have a go.
