Video: Onboard a Chevron B19 in full attack mode
The successor to the B16 Spyder, Derek Bennett’s Chevron B19s were built for one thing and one thing only: to win.
The wide-bodied, long-tailed, open-topped race cars were designed from scratch with a reinforced steel spaceframe, plus a separate steel front spaceframe to make accident repairs easier. Powered mostly by the 1.8-litre, four-cylinder Cosworth FVC engine, the 35 units competed successfully in endurance racing around the globe from 1971 onwards.
Such was the model’s prowess that today, almost 50 years later, the B19 is still eliciting gasps as it screams around iconic race circuits.
Take this brilliant run around the Circuit Paul Ricard during the Dix Mille Tours du Castellet. Climb onboard with Alexander Furiani as he pilots the royal blue example around the sun-soaked Southern French circuit, shifting through the gears slickly, clinging to the racing line and slicing his way past slower traffic.
