The sportscar turnout at 2017's Silverstone Classic was second to few. The FIA Masters Historic Sportscars put on a wondrous spectacle as they hacked it out around the track and the Goodwood favourite front-mid '60s GTs made the Northamptonshire circuit feel like home.
A grid with everything from Chevron B8s and a solitary Group 5 De Tomaso Pantera, to the thunderous Lola T70 Mk3B made the FIA Masters grid an utter spectacle. Then there was the racing. Lord knows it wasn’t the cleanest race but it was definitely one of the most exciting. Lots of rubbing, lots of daring manoeuvres and plenty of calamity: Punctures, impacts, bits falling off left right and centre. When stationary we might be wowed by the value and significance of some of these spectacular old cars but that never stops the red mist from descending when it comes to racing.
Of course, an incredible selection of staple Goodwood favourites added to Silverstone Classic sportscar roster, with Cobras, Astons, E-types, Austin-Healeys, TVRs and more battling it out in the Gallet Trophy for pre-'66 GTs and the RAC TT for pre-'63 GTs. For aficionados of the classic endurance racer, you won't find a lineup like that outside of our own Motor Circuit gates of a busy September weekend...
It’s got us properly excited for when racing returns to Goodwood for this year’s Revival.
