In these uncertain motorsport times we all need some cheering up. Pretty much everything has been called off for the foreseeable few months, so we all need some motorsport to keep us going. Fear not, Goodwood is here to help you all!
We’re pulling together some collections of content to get you through these fallow days and keep us all entertained. So read on, relax, and enjoy the weekend.
This video is the antidote to those ‘calming RnB to focus’ videos. A kind of relaxation for the petrolhead generation. A few minutes of just nothing but beautiful sideways sights and screaming sounds. Coming at you all the way from the original home of drifting. This is drifting in its natural form, with some beautiful videography and some brilliant drone work thrown in. If you’re feeling at all panicked about the current situation, this is the video for you.
Alternatively there’s the maestro himself – Tom Kristensen – wheeling the unwieldy Ford Thunderbird around Goodwood in the midst of the St Mary’s Trophy back in 2018. The big T-Bird really wasn’t made for circuit racing, it’s got all the grunt in the world, but the giant wheel makes it feel like you’re guiding a ship into port at warp speed rather than racing a classic racing car round HQ. But TK being TK he’s having a whale of a time, just whirling this giant machine round Goodwood, and monstering the smaller cars as he goes. You can almost hear Derek Zoolander as he goes past each rival exclaiming ‘what are these, cars for ants?!’
Going back a bit further in our own archive, we thought we’d remember this frankly joyous moment. It begins when the strangely-bemuscled Simon Diffey has a little spin at the 73rd Members’ Meeting. No biggy of course, except when you realise he was driving a Maserati 250F. As often happens with old cars, as he was trying to keep it in a straight line Diffey stalled the engine on the big Maser. Usually that means game over, get out and trudge off, a quick wave to the crowd before you make your way back to your team. But not our Simon, oh no. He’s been building up those biceps for a reason. And, with a little use of the only real slope on the whole of the Goodwood Motor Circuit he reached out and bump started the car himself… from the inside! It has to be seen to be believed. But bravo sir. Bravo!
Truck racing is nothing new, there’s a pretty big truck racing movement in Europe, and even Goodwood regular Steve Parrish has spent time wheeling a big rig. But of course it turns out that the Australians do it on a bigger scale. This is the first time we’ve stumbled across Australian Super Truck racing. These are proper big rigs, and we mean big. And they’re being raced hard. There’s even a driver competing called Zammit. It’s not for the environmentally minded though, just look at all that black smoke pouring out as they round the first corner. Maybe it’s time for Tesla Truck racing?
This BMW 635 CSI is awesome. Yes we’ve said that twice, but it’s absolutely worth repeating. Sam Hancock is a man who knows what he’s talking about when it comes to historic racing cars. So he was the perfect man to be our guide at the Monza Historic when we found this wonderful ex-Schnitzer car racing in the Heritage Touring Car Cup. Safe to say it has its quirks – like a dogleg first gear that will haunt you at Monza’s tight first chicane. But you’re rewarded with that stunning straight-six motor and the brilliant looks. What an awesome mixture it is.
