Daytona at dawn
A 24 hour race sees the sun cross the horizon twice. That's a very obvious statement to make but for the 2018 Classic Daytona 24 the first passing was a bit of a damp squib – not because of the competition, indeed it saw some of the best action of the weekend – but because cloud cover obscured the sky's evening show.
Delightfully, around 12 hours later the clouds had cleared and Florida was able to put on a real light show for us as the sun rose over the cars of Groups F and A. As it turned from black to purple to orange the battle raged below, with cars that had left the pits festooned with bars and beacons to light their way now able to see their path without the hindrance of dark. It was a stunning sight as it rose over the back of the circuit, bathing its glow over Daytona's first horseshoe.
