Video: Very sideways Hesketh F1 run up Festival of Speed Hill
You’ve got to be made of strong stuff when you strap into a Formula 1 car. They’re loud, generate forces that our bodies just aren’t used to, stupidly fast and, funnily enough, hate being driven slowly. Drive an F1 car and you really need to hustle. Which is exactly what we’re seeing here with this Hesketh 308E.
Built for the 1978 season the 308E was the last F1 car to be constructed by privateer team Hesketh before it folded, half way through the year. The car achieved very little, in the grand scheme of motoring creations it’s still fast, loud and incredibly exciting, as you can see and hear from Michael Lyons’ drive in it at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard in 2015. We’ve already shown you the onboard footage, but the cockpit-cam doesn’t give you quite the same perspective on the more-than-a-little-terrifying angles Lyons pulls all the way up the Hill. He’d clearly had his Weetabix.
