Creative interpretations of the racing rulebook have produced some scarcely believable machinery over the years. Whether initially allowed to race, or just outright denied from the get-go, these are eight banned racing cars in action again at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard.

Whether it’s being powered by a jet, having fans hanging off the back, running sliding skirts, using a second chassis or a dicky engine, it’s included in this list. Some of those banned features will be more obvious than others but what unites them all is a competitive edge the rule-makers in period just couldn’t allow...
