Netflix and Formula 1 have confirmed that their wildly popular fly-on-the-wall-ish documentary about F1, Drive To Survive, will return for a fourth season in 2022.
The streaming mega-giant and motorsport’s most famous series first began working together during the 2018 season to produce the series, which has gone on to become an important part of F1’s attempts to appeal to a wider audience.
While Netflix does not release viewing figures for any of its shows, the continuation of Drive To Survive suggests that it has been a popular addition for both parties.
Highlights from the first three seasons have included an inside look at the stand-off between Red Bull and Renault over the latter’s exploding engines, later reignited by the poaching of Daniel Ricciardo in 2018. The following year saw Mercedes’ implosion at their home race in 2019 with Lewis Hamilton left sat outside his team’s pit box for over a minute. In 2020 we saw the raw reactions from the paddock to Romain Grosjean’s monster crash at Bahrain.
No publishing date has been given for season four of Drive to Survive but, if it follows the pattern of the first three seasons, expect to see the latest series on Netflix in the build-up to the 2022 F1 season. While the fourth season of Drive to Survive has only just been announced, we expect that the cameras from producers Box-to-Box films have been in garages up and down the pitlane throughout the 2021 season.

Updated 10:50 Monday 28th February 2022. Netflix has released the trailer for the fourth series of Drive to Survive, which launches in full on 11th March. Featuring only Lewis Hamilton of the title protagonists, it’s clear that a lack of access to Max Verstappen will not stop the makers amping up the rivalry of last season, with the aggressive trailer even including Lewis Hamilton describing the sport as “war”.
