Former F3 runner-up and F2 championship contender Jack Doohan will be promoted to a full-time F1 drive with Alpine in 2025, replacing the outgoing Esteban Ocon.

Doohan, the son of motorcycle racing legend Mick, and who drove an Alpine-liveried Renault F1 car up the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard Hill this year, has been a long-time Alpine junior driver and acted as the team's reserve this year.

The 21-year-old will now partner lead driver Pierre Gasly for the new season after a year on the sidelines helping the team in the simulator that Alpine described as "valuable.”

Doohan was a strong contender in both F3 and F2. He won three F3 races in 2021 on his way to runner-up spot behind Dennis Hauger and added six F2 race victories over two seasons for a best finish of third behind Theo Pourchaire in 2023. During that time he was the first driver in F2 to ever combine pole, race win, fastest lap an lead every lap of a feature race in Hungary.

Doohan will continue as reserve driver for the rest of 2024, while stepping up a test programme in the 2022 Alpine A522 to prepare him for his first season in Formula 1. Alpine has not revealed how long Doohan's new F1 contract will last.

Speaking about the promotion, Doohan said: “I am so happy to secure promotion into a full-time race seat in 2025 with BWT Alpine F1 Team. I am very grateful for the trust and belief by the team’s senior management.”

"There is so much work ahead to be prepared and ready and I will give my best in the meantime to absorb as much information and knowledge to be ready for the step up.

"It's an exciting moment, a proud day for my family, and I look forward to taking it all in and pushing hard behind the scenes.”

New Alpine F1 boss Oliver Oakes, who stepped in to replace the outgoing Bruno Famin over the summer break, added: ”We are very excited to promote Jack into the race seat from next season and, in doing so, giving him the opportunity to showcase his skill and talent in Formula 1.

"Jack will become the first driver to graduate from the Alpine Academy into a race driver position with the team, so that is exceptionally pleasing for the team and its young driver pathway. Personally, I have worked with Jack back in 2019 and I am fully aware of his raw talent and potential. He is a very hard worker behind the scenes and his commitment is hugely valued by the entire team.

"Alongside Pierre, we have a well-balanced driver line-up with a good combination between youthful energy, experience, and pure speed. We look forward to working with both Jack and Pierre in order to keep developing the car and bring the team up the grid.”
