Gallery: Epic 1970s F1 cars strut their stuff in Monaco

14th May 2022
Ben Miles

The 1970s was the era that properly changed Formula 1. Rather than just strapping an engine into a tube and sending some brave people to hurl the creation around a circuit, engineers started to make strides in the fields of aerodynamics and mechanical development.

As such the cars, which had already begun to be moulded by the movement of air, became more and more sculpted. Through the decade F1 cars sprouted more complicated wings before, eventually, aerodynamics fully took over as the ground effect revolution arrived.

That means the variety of car you’ll see in this period is almost unrivalled, and one of the greatest collections of machinery from the era you’ll ever see is to be found at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix. These are just a few of the cars from Ferrari, McLaren, Tyrrell, Williams and more that are attacking the streets of Monte-Carlo this weekend.
