Five single-seaters to look out for at 75MM

16th March 2017

Members’ Meeting isn’t all stripped-out dad-mobiles, sportscars and GT racers. As ever at Goodwood there’s a place on the Motor Circuit for the purpose-built single-seater weapons. Here’s our five favourites you should look out for at 75MM.

Lotus-Climax 18

A triumphant return to Members’ Meeting for this storied Lotus-Climax 18. Following a date with the wall on the start-finish straight that left it, let’s say, out of action – sans a wheel or two and with a crumpled snout, it’s been a battle getting the old girl back in working order for 75MM. Catch it racing in the Brabham Trophy. Fingers firmly crossed for better luck this year!

Cooper-Climax T53 Lowline

Cooper owned top-flight Grand Prix racing in 1960. Its name spread far and wide with the T51, and it dominated the 1960 season with the T53 ‘Lowline’. It’s an early example of one of Jack Brabham’s master strokes, as featured on the 31-car demonstration we had at last year’s Revival Meeting. Catch it honouring Jack once again in the Brabham Trophy at 75MM!

JBW-Maserati

The JBW-Maserati is the definition of an underdog. It suffered under the weight and dominance of the Lotuses and Coopers, with the team lacking the funds, infrastructure and resource to mount full championship campaigns. In spite of patchy reliability however, a top-ten placing would spurn them on for a more comprehensive effort in 1960. A swing and a miss again, however, as mechanical gremlins would continue to plague them. A less than epic career, but we live for the fight of underdogs versus dominants in motorsport. It’s a unique entry in this year’s Brabham grid, too.

Maserati 8CM

The Maserati 8CM joins a cohort of pre-war Grand Prix racers tussling at 75MM in the Varzi Trophy. Appropriately named after Achille Varzi – one of the great drivers of the era. Fierce, famous Varzi rival and teammate, Tazio Nuvolari, piloted an 8CM to victory in the Belgian Grand Prix.

Lotus-Ford 31

The Derek Bell Cup is so named because the Goodwood legend himself pedalled this breed of cars at the beginning of his career. This specifically pertains to the Lotus 31, which in period would see then single-seater debutant Bell, take to the sport in anger for the first time: Humble beginnings for one of the great names in all of motor racing. We all start somewhere!
