While the past few Formula 1 world championships have been dominated by Mercedes, the name ‘Ferrari’ will forever be cemented in the motorsport history books; the Scuderia has won 16 constructors’ and 15 drivers’ Formula 1 championships since the series began in 1950.
How do you go about celebrating Ferrari’s Formula 1 success? For artist Mark Dickens it means collaborating with photographer Keith Sutton to create ‘Ferrari in Art – The Sporting Legacy’. For this collection of 25 paintings, Dickens and Sutton called on drivers and engineers, and Ferrari fans, collectors and personalities, to hand-write what Ferrari means to them before incorporating their thoughts into the works.
Alongside the collection to celebrate Ferrari’s achievements in Formula 1, the duo created ‘World Champions in Art’, 32 paintings that each celebrate a Formula 1 champion, including Juan Manuel Fangio, Alberto Ascari, Mario Andretti, Alan Jones, Mika Häkkinen and Sebastian Vettel.
We went along to a presentation of the collections at the Royal Automobile Club in London, to hear from Dickens and Sutton and to see the artworks first hand.
