With modern racing cars, you can either be fast or you can go sideways. It’s not that way with historic saloon cars, as ably demonstrated by Andrew Jordan aboard his Lotus Cortina for the Jim Clark Trophy. This often sideways lap claimed him and team mate David Dickenson second on the grid.
Another BTCC star who makes fast, sideways progress look easy is Gordon Shedden. Watch as he wrestles this Ford GT40 around the fast curves of the Goodwood, including a splice of on-board where things look remarkably calm at the wheel. While we’re talking on-boards, our favourite of the day was riding with Patrick Blakeney-Edwards bringing his Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica to sixth on the grid for the Tony Gaze Trophy.
Our third BTCC driver in this compilation is Jake Hill whose exploits in his Ford Capri earned him pole in heat one of the Gordon Spice Trophy. By stark contrast to the Capri, the Darracq of Mark Walker in the S.F. Edge Trophy looks like someone has strapped and engine to a chassis, added a seat and decided the car is finished. It gives spectators a clear view of him working at the over-size steering wheel to hustle the car to the front row of the grid. Nick Swift gained the same second-place spot on the grid of heat two of the Gordon Spice Trophy. The Mini specialist drove his 1275GT in his inimitable style.
Setting the two-wheeled world alight was British Superbike star Michael Rutter aboard his Honda CB 750 on the way to pole position in the Hailwood Trophy (featuring the Sheene Trophy) race. Marvel at his commitment through St. Mary’s...
