Sunday at the 81st Members' Meeting is always dedicated to racing action, apart from the demonstrations which of course bring their own spectacle. We opened with a morning of single-seater action, as the Parnell Cup for grand prix, Formula 2 and voiturette cars from 1935-1953 led into the Derek Bell Cup Formula 3 race. There were plenty of great slides, spins and battles to wake us all up.
We then moved into the incredible bikes of the Hailwood Trophy and onto three wheels for the absolutely mind-blowing Sidecar Shootout, with these screaming machines and their fearless riders wowing the crowds.
Following these diminutive machines, the thumping mid-engined sportscars of the Surtees Trophy to give a very different flavour, with one of the best battles for the win of the entire meeting closing out the race. They were followed the Ken Miles Cup presented by LGT Wealth Management which saw a grid full of ’65 and ’66 Ford Mustangs battling it out in celebration of the famous model’s 60th birthday.
Following the wonderful Can-Am celebration, where the drivers really managed to stretch the legs of these savage machines – including Jackie Oliver in his championship-winning DN4 – we had the insane century-old specials of the S.F. Edge Trophy. They contrasted wonderfully with the next-generation, carbon-tubbed, 11,000rpm V12-engined GMA supercars, the screaming T.50s and T.33, on track in prototype form to tease and tantalise our Members.
