Video: Gliding a brutal-sounding Ford Mustang round Goodwood in 75MM testing

24th February 2017
Ben Miles

When it's February and the first real track action of the year – even if for that month it's a mild day – there's not a lot of grip to be had out on the Goodwood Motor Circuit. That's why it's fortunate that Craig Davies' Ford Mustang doesn't really rely on outright grip for lap times.

No, instead of clinging to the tarmac like a homesick limpet, Davies chooses to extract lap time through the medium of floatation, using his historic racing rubber rather like a skater would use the blade of their boot to cross the ice.

It may seem crude, but actually controlling the Mustang's immense wish to spend its day constantly sideways is in fact gloriously effective. So much so that on his second lap he catches and passes a much younger Group 1 Ford Escort, also enjoying its first outing of the year. However the little Escort does appear to slightly unsettle Craig, as he runs the Ford perilously wide exiting Woodcote, but, as an experienced racer of muscular American metal, he's able to clear the situation up before the chicane.
