Race report: 77MM – Gurney Cup

09th April 2019
Richard Heseltine

Cameron Jackson scorched to victory in the Gurney Cup for sports-racing prototypes aboard John Monson’s ex-Brian Nelson Crosslé-Oldsmobile Mk5S. Aston Martin test driver Chris Goodwin was first out of the blocks from the middle of the front row in his Lotus 23B, but Craig Dolby won the drag race into Madgwick for the first time in the Tolman Motorsport Lotus-Oldsmobile 19 recreation. Sadly, this V8-engined sports-racer, which had previously won in the hands of Rob Huff, retired on the second tour. Jackson wasn’t troubled thereafter as he assumed the lead, with only Goodwin appearing to be a threat until he spun off at Lavant third time around.

While Cameron held a 14.8 second lead after five laps, Ford GT40s waged war behind him. Joaquín Folch-Rusinol drove superbly in his ex-Escuderia Montjuich example, with Craig Davies and John Hugenholtz keeping a watching brief. Sadly, the former made an uncharacteristic mistake and went off at Lavant with only two minutes to run, with the black Ford beaching itself in the gravel trap. Davies came home second, some 25 seconds behind the leader, with Hugenholtz third. Andrew Hibbert was first of the four cylinder runners home in fourth in his Lotus 23B.
