Chris Ward emerged victorious in the Salvadori Cup race for 1955-60 sports-racing cars in his Lister-Jaguar ‘Knobbly.’ However, it was Miles Griffith who sprinted into an early lead from the middle of the front row aboard his bright orange Lotus 15.

Griffith’s lead only lasted as far as the Lavant Straight, though, as Ward’s more powerful machine blasted by with the Lotus of Charlie Martin also following through with a brilliantly opportunistic move. Unfortunately, he was forced to retire the car shortly thereafter.

Griffith continued to keep Ward within sight, but man on the move was James Cottingham. The Tojeiro pilot had been obliged to start from the back of the field after his practice times were disallowed for a technical infringement. He scythed through the pack, the DK Engineering man guiding his Jaguar-engined machine up to sixth place by half-distance of the 20-minute encounter.

Cottingham, fresh from claiming honours in the Gurney Cup, was up to third place with six minutes left to run and homing in on second place man Griffith. However, the safety car was then deployed after Julian Majzub spun off into gravel in his Sadler. Racing resumed for a one-lap sprint, with Ward nailing the restart. He won by 3.871 seconds from Griffith who was 0.3 seconds ahead of Cottingham as they crossed the line.
