IWC Historic Racing launches at #76MM

The car’s a Mercedes Gullwing, the team is the IWC Historic Racing Team, the driver is David Coulthard and the watch is the new limited-edition 76th Members’ Meeting Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition. All of them made their debut at a snowy Motor Circuit on Saturday. 

‘DC’ is making his MM debut driving the 300SL Gullwing in the Salvadori Cup, ahead of other historic events for the new team, including the Le Mans Classic.

“This will be the first time we have raced our own car at Goodwood,” IWC’s CEO Chris Grainger tells GRR. “We have been at the Members’ Meeting since 2015 but I didn’t like the idea that we were standing on the sidelines. We are already in Formula 1 and GT3 so it was logical for us to start a historic race team.”

David Coulthard said he was looking forward to driving the Gullwing in the Salvadori Cup, where he will be up against Jaguar D-Types and Birdcage Maseratis.

Chris, a designer by training who says he doodles as many racing cars as he does watches, adds: “With all the snow I have confidence that the combination of a Scottish driver and a German car will give us the edge against all the open-top cars.”

And the new watch? The latest in the special Members’ Meeting editions, the 76th MM edition, unveiled for the first time on Saturday, is notable for its MM pale blue hands and digits that mimic the numbers on the Gullwing’s dials. The back is see-through – all the better to see the in-house IWC movement – and inscribed with 76th Members Meeting. Just 176 are available and the price is £7590.
