Gallery: GT1 endurance racers take to Goodwood

18th March 2017
Adam Wilkins

In the 1990s, they were the very pinnacle of GT racing. Today, GT1 cars still have the ability to stop you in your tracks. Just ask anyone who has tried to walk past the line-up in the paddock.

The McLaren F1 GTR holds a special place in the heart of many an endurance racing fan. The three-seater road car was never intended to be a racing car, yet in GTR trim it took a convincing Le Mans 24-hour victory in 1995. It wasn't long until the competition upped the ante, and the advent of the likes of the Porsche 911 GT1 and Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR lead to the developmen of the McLaren F1 GTR Long Tail. They're all here.

Where the origial McLaren was very much a road car adpated for racing, later GT1 cars clearly put racing first – with homologation road cars the afterthought. Look closely, though, and you'll see that many of the cars here now have numberplates. You can't deny the fun of putting an endurance racer on the road, and many owners have done just that.

But the track is where they really belong, and in this gallery you can see them taking to Goodwood for a high-speed demonstration. As well as the McLaren and Porsche mentioned above, look out for the Ferrari F40 LM and Lotus Elise GT1.
