Updated: Full race list for 78th Members’ Meeting confirmed

27th September 2021

The 78th Goodwood Members’ Meeting has been bounced around the calendar over the last few years, but now we’re finally a few weeks away from the event going ahead. So we thought it was time to just remind you of exactly what you’ll see in the closing event of the 2021 Goodwood season.

The event promises to be more thrilling than ever before, with cars stretching from the Edwardian era right through to the 1980s, a plethora of new or returning races, two exciting demos and something we’ve never done at a Members’ Meeting before.

Pierpoint Cup

As always there will be a two-driver race to bring the track action to a close on the Saturday of Members’ Meeting. But in a change to tradition the Pierpoint Cup will take that place rather than the Gerry Marshall Trophy. The Pierpoint Cup is a race for V8 saloon cars that raced up to 1966. That means a field made up of Plymouth Barracudas, Ford Falcons, Mustangs and Galaxies. It will be one of the best sounding races Goodwood has ever had.

Gerry Marshall Trophy

Fear not touring car fans, the beloved race for Group 1 machines will still take place and will actually take up more of the Members’ Meeting than ever before. After the success of the Betty Richmond Trophy at 77MM, the Gerry Marshall Trophy at 78MM will be split into two heats and a final, all of 20 minutes. That means around 60 touring car legends of the ‘70s and early ‘80s will do battle. The heats will play out on Saturday before a winner-takes-all final on Sunday. Expect to see Chevy Camaros, Ford Capris, Rover SD1s, Triumph Dolomite Sprints, Mini 1275 GTs and Escort RS 2000s and more in action.

S.F. Edge Trophy

Also going through a format change is the S.F. Edge Trophy, one of the Members’ Meeting’s most beloved races, for Edwardian Specials from before 1923. After a successful trial at Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard, the S.F. Edge Trophy will now be split into two, frantic, five-lap races across the weekend, the only distance-certain races of the event. If you saw how action-packed the two races at SpeedWeek were, you’ll know how exciting a prospect this new format will be.

Earl Howe Trophy

Not far removed from the Edwardian era is the Earl Howe Trophy. Named after the fifth Earl Howe, the race celebrates the first French Grand Prix, for two-seater Grand Prix and Voiturette cars of a type that raced up until 1933. Howe, himself a racing driver, was the co-founder of the British Racing Drivers Club, and it is for this that the Members’ Meeting honours him with a namesake race.

Arundell Cup

Much like the Revival’s Richmond and Gordon Trophies race, the Arundell cup is a bit of a split field, with two trophies to be awarded. The race is a 20-minute challenge for rear-engined Formula Junior cars of a type that raced up until 1964, with both drum and disc-braked cars taking part. The winner is likely to be from the disc-braked group so the Taylor Trophy will be awarded to the first drum-braked car that crosses the line.

Don Parker Trophy

The smallest cars that race at Goodwood also create some of the most competitive action. The Don Parker Trophy is a 15-minute sprint for 500cc Formula 3 cars, from the era that launched the careers of the likes of Sir Stirling Moss. These tiny machines are all powered by motorbike engines prominently from Norton or JAP.

Moss Trophy

A short sharp sprint for the kinds of GT racing cars that raced between 1958 and 1962. This 20-minute race will see cars including road-bodied E-types and narrow shell AC Cobras do battle in honour of one of the greatest racing drivers of all time.

Hailwood Trophy

The Hailwood Trophy was the first bike race ever held at a Members’ Meeting and features 250 and 350cc Grand Prix motorcycles racing against each other. For the 78th Members’ Meeting, in keeping with the regular traditions of club bike racing, a second class will race alongside the Hailwood Trophy bikes. This group of F750 bikes from the early-‘70s will compete for the Sheene Trophy.

Gurney Cup

The second two-driver race of the weekend, the Gurney Cup graduates to the longer 45-minute format for the first time in 2021. Since its debut, honouring one of Goodwood’s greatest heroes and friends, Dan Gurney, the Gurney Cup has become a fan favourite, featuring an eclectic mix of GT40s, Lola T70s, Porsche 906s and more. This year the race will be the longest on the Sunday of the event and will be the first time a modern Members’ Meeting has seen driver changes in a non-single make prototype race.

Salvadori Cup

Named after Le Mans 24hr winner Roy Salvadori, who famously stormed to victory with Caroll Shelby in 1959, the Salvadori Cup is open to world championship sportscars that competed from 1955 to 1960. Jaguar D-Type long-noses, Lotus 15s, Lister Knobblies, Cooper T59 Monacos and Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcages will all contest this 20-minute cup, which is easily the most curvaceous race of the weekend.

Ronnie Hoare Trophy

Having said that, the Ronnie Hoare Trophy may run that title close. Named after Colonel Ronnie Hoare, Maranello Concessionaires founder and the ‘60’s premier Ferrari importer, the race will be open to roadgoing and sports GT cars that raced internationally from 1960 to ‘66. A battle between British and continental cars is predicted, with the likes of Triumph TR4s facing up against the continental cohort of Abarth Simcas, 275 GTB Ferraris and Porsche 904s and 911 SWBs.

As if that wasn’t enough there will also be demonstrations and more taking place throughout the weekend in what is set to be a truly spectacular weekend, streamed here in full on GRR.
