Five decades of Le Mans winners to race at 77MM
The 77th Goodwood Members’ Meeting may be later in the year than it has been before, but that doesn’t mean we should hold you on tenterhooks waiting to find out who’s going to be jumping behind the wheel.
The revived Members’ meetings have always received strong support from the sportscar community – and this year is set to be no exception, as Le Mans winners from every decade for the last 50 years are set to strut their stuff on track.
Just 11 of these legendary drivers represent a mighty 31 overall and class victories at the world’s greatest endurance race – including a record breaking nine for “Mr Le Mans” (and possible “Mr Goodwood” Tom Kristensen.
That incredible list of Le Mans winners is:
Romain Dumas – two overall wins (2010 & 2016) & one class win (2013)
Hans-Joachim Stuck – two overall wins (1986 & 1987) & one class win (1996)
Guy Smith – one overall win (2003)
Dieter Quester – one class win (1973)
Neel Jani – one overall win (2016)
Alex Wurz – two overall wins (1996 & 2009)
Darren Turner – three class wins (2007, 2008 & 2017)
Jochen Mass – one overall win (1989)
Emanuele Pirro – five overall wins (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006 & 2007) & one class win (2003)
Richard Attwood – one overall win (1970)
Tom Kristensen – nine overall wins (1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 & 2013)
We will be particularly delighted to welcome a group of drivers who have never raced at the Goodwood Motor Circuit before.
That incredible list features Bentley Le Mans winner Guy Smith, ’73 class champ Dieter Quester, ’16 champion and Porsche factory driver Neel Jani, ’96 and 2009 champion and former F1 podium winner Alexander Wurz and the legendary double Le Mans winner Hans-Joacchim Stuck.
Guy Smith, who won Le Mans in 2003 at the wheel of a Bentley Speed 8 said, “I can’t wait for the Members’ Meeting. I have attended the Festival of Speed quite a few times with Bentley, and it’s always such a fantastic event, but I’ve never done an event at the circuit. I am still a relative novice on the Goodwood Circuit as while I’ve done a few manufacturer track days, I still have a lot to learn.
"It’s a real old-school circuit with some fantastic sweeping, fast corners that always provides amazing racing. I have also never done any historic racing before, but I have done some historic rallying in both a Mk1 and Mk2 Ford Escort in the RAC Rally, which was brilliant fun. I’ll be racing in the Gerry Marshall Trophy, and from what I have seen, and heard, the racing is epic! To see so many iconic cars, that I grew up watching as a young boy, out on track together will be a real treat.”
We will announce what these icons of endurance racing will be pedalling at the April event over the coming months, but remember that the only way to see the event, in person or online, is by becoming a member of the GRRC Fellowship.
