76MM Sears Trophy – race report

19th March 2018
Richard Heseltine

A frantic battle for Sears Trophy honours brought the curtain down on the 76th Members’ Meeting. Andrew Jordan drove a storming race to head a 1-2-3-4 blanket finish for Lotus Cortinas. Fellow touring car star Steve Soper led initially from pole, only to have a major off-piste moment on the opening tour.

Jordan then assumed the lead, only to lose it almost immediately to Andy Wolfe before reasserting himself at the front of the field within a couple of corners. However, the safety car was deployed on lap two after Shaun Lynn rolled his Lotus Cortina at Fordwater. Once racing resumed, Jordan and Wolfe continued from where they left off, with Mark Sumpter also joining the lead battle. The trio became a quartet as Soper tore through the pack to challenge Sumpter for the last podium position, but the positions remained static to the flag. Jordan recorded the fastest lap of the race on the final tour to win by less than a second.

“Steve got a better start, but I got a better run through Fordwater,” Jordan said later. “Mark was also right there and then my door came open through the chicane. The safety car upset my rhythm, but it was good, clean racing later on. I loved it!”
