Skinny tyres, cross-ply tyres and heavy rain. A fine recipe for oversteer, wouldn’t you say?
This is the Madgwick Cup from the 2016 Revival, a 25-minute sportscar dash that saw every driver working the wheel hard. All of these beautiful machines were built between 1955 and 1960, and because they aren’t the most powerful cars at the Revival, with engines limited to 2.5-litres or less, to get the most out of them you have to carry speed through the corners. And carrying speed through the corners is pretty difficult when the normal rubber-covered racing line feels like an ice rink and there are giant puddles everywhere else.
What the tricky conditions did bring were some fantastic overtakes. It isn’t easy navigating a rain-soaked Goodwood Motor Circuit, let alone while having to cut past other cars and doing so without a windscreen and therefore window wipers…
And don’t forget, if you want to see some historic motor racing at Goodwood in 2020 be sure to tune in for Goodwood SpeedWeek in October. A one-off behind closed door event, you’ll be able to watch it for free on GRR.
