GT racing cars have been a central piece of Goodwood Motor Circuit racing for its entire history – so of course they had to be at the centre of our one-off Goodwood SpeedWeek in 2020. The showpiece event for these mighty machines is the RAC TT Celebration, but what can you expect from this brilliant race?
The RAC TT Celebration is a two-driver race for closed-cockpit GT cars that raced from 1960-1964. The race is a celebration of the original RAC TT – the world’s oldest continuous motor race, which has been contested since 1905. The race, normally held at the Goodwood Revival, but this year moving to take place at SpeedWeek, relives the period from 1960 to ’63 when the RAC TT was held at Goodwood for GT cars – during which time it was won twice by Stirling Moss, once by Graham Hill and once by Innes Ireland. It is contested over a 45-minute non-stop period and each car must have two drivers, with a pit stop in the middle to change over.
While the TT’s time racing at Goodwood – from 1958 to 1969 – saw sports prototypes race as well, the RAC TT Celebration is for GT cars of the 1960-’64 period. That means a grid made up of icons of the 1960s. Victory is often fought between lightweight Jaguar E-types, Shelby Cobras and the odd TVR. But the grid has also features Ferraris 250 GTO and 250 LM, Chevrolet Corvettes, Porsche 904s, Bizzarinis, Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupes and even in more recent times a pair of Tojeiros.
Last year’s TT was littered with some of the top names in world motorsport. Won by a storming drive from three-time Le Mans winner, World Endurance, Super Formula and Super GT Champion and one-time F1 driver, Andre Lotterer, the TT also featured fellow Le Mans winners Romain Dumas, Emanuele Pirro, David Brabham, Darren Turner, Jochen Mass, Derek Bell and Neel Jani as well as multiple Indy 500 winner and IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti. In the past it has also featured legends including Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Tom Kristensen, Damon Hill and Martin Brundle as well as BTCC champions Andrew Jordan, Matt Neal, Jason Plato and Gordon Shedden. We’ll be announcing names of drivers taking part in the race closer to the event right here on GRR.
As part of Goodwood’s once-in-a-lifetime SpeedWeek you’ll be able to watch the race, as well as practice and qualifying on the Goodwood Road & Racing website or on our social media channels over 16th-18th October 2020.
