18th October 2020

There was another beautiful sunrise this morning in West Sussex and we are greeted by the sight of dew-soaked bodywork, the sounds of raucously warming engines and the smell of high octane. It could only be Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard.

We have been taking a stroll around the paddocks and admiring some of the metal which will be doing battle in the day’s big races. First off the grid will be the cars of the Richmond & Gordon Trophy, representing the seminal era in Formula 1 when the cars switched from front to rear-engined configurations. Examples of both have won here in the past so it is always one to watch. Speaking of F1, we have an incredible collection of machines here at SpeedWeek, representing the full 70 years of the series’ history

Later will be the loud, and we really do mean that, aero-engined oddities of the S.F. Edge Trophy and the final part of the St. Mary’s Trophy, the David and Goliath for ‘60s tin-tops. Jumping back a decade, the Lavant Cup represents the era when motorsport began to get serious again after WW2 and Jaguar, Ferrari, Aston Martin and Maserati threw everything they had into sports car competition. This rivalry of course only grew in the 1960s and led to one of our favourite races here at Goodwood, the RAC TT Celebration, with Cobras and E-types swapping for the lead lap after lap.

Interspersed will be celebrations of the milestones of Bentley and TWR, as well as a look at what the future of motorsport may look like…
