Gallery: Roaring V8s in the Whitsun Trophy

17th October 2020

For our money, the Whitsun Trophy is one of, if not the best sounding race event at Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard. Packed full of growling V8 sports-prototypes, the Whitsun pays homage to a menacing yet magical period of 1960s motorsport.

A time known for its rapid development and evolution, the field of speed machines on show are much like those that competed at the Goodwood Motor Circuit before its closure in 1966. Those involved in period, including Freddie March, suggested these behemoths were becoming too quick for the rolling, undulating circuit.

Watching the likes of GT40s, McLaren-Chevrolet M1As and Lotus-Ford 23Bs screaming out of the chicane on Saturday morning before tearing off down the pit straight is certainly a spectacle. And one which very quickly transports you to a time where these rear-engined endurance machines were at the sharp end of motorsport technology. Enjoy the gallery.
