Gallery: Reverse grid madness in the Gerry Marshall Sprint
Goodwood’s very own 1970s school run, otherwise known as the Gerry Marshall Trophy, flips the fastest to the back of the grid for the Gerry Marshall Sprint. That means the big-banger Ford Mustang Boss and Chevrolet Camaros have to fight their way through the pack of Capris, Volkswagens, Minis, Fiestas and more.
With hard luck in the Trophy resulting in a middling 13th, the Rover SD1 of Nick Jarvis had a chance to fight back in the Sprint, securing fourth. Bad luck for the winning Boss Mustang in the Trophy, driven by Gerry Marshall first-timer Fred Shepherd, came in the shape of a DNF.
There’s nothing like the Gerry Marshall Trophy and Gerry Marshall Sprint to give the hopeful feeling of a bright year ahead. Ordinarily when taking place in the Spring at the Members’ Meeting that would be the case. Nevertheless, it was an essential inclusion for SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard, a dose of respite in what is one of the strangest years in recent memory. The cars many will have been driving home for Christmas in decades past are a comforting sight battling for supremacy on the Motor Circuit.
