Gallery: A tribute to Sir Stirling Moss at SpeedWeek

On Easter Sunday 2020, the world lost a legend when Sir Stirling Moss passed away at the ago of 90. And here at SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard, we have felt that loss vividly, for it was with Goodwood that his career was entwined, from his first single seater race in 1948 – which he won – to the career-ending crash on Easter Monday in 1962.

But the charismatic Sir Stirling held no grudge for the location where he almost lost his life, and returned regularly upon the revival of the circuit, competing (and winning) in countless races.

While he may be gone, he will never be forgotten, with the Duke of Richmond officially renaming the Kinrara Trophy the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy following a moving tribute yesterday. Open to closed-cockpit GT cars from before 1963, the Trophy represents just one category in which Moss excelled.

It was one such eligible car that led the commemorations, with its current custodian, Ross Brawn, performing a slow lap in Moss’ 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB/C. In 1960 Moss drove the deep blue car to victory thrice, including at the Goodwood Tourist Trophy, where he famously listened to the live race commentary over the radio, later revealing that it had been helpful to know the gap behind him.

Heads bowed, the small crowd at SpeedWeek watched and remembered, the great, late Sir Stirling Moss.
