The ensuing qualifying session was intense, his knee-down, head-down stance wringing every last bit of potential from the classic motorcycle. In fact, it turned out that he did get everything he could out of the bike when a last-corner mechanical fault curtailed what looked like being pole-winning time. In the end, his 1:37.369 best time was good for third position. Bring on the race!
