The 2023 Goodwood Revival is under way and we’re right in the thick of it. If you were unable to be here or keep abreast of the live stream for the first day of the event, here is our pick of the ten best moments. Settle in for the sights and sounds of the Goodwood Motor Circuit.
Setting the tone for the whole video, it kicks off with following a glorious Ferrari 250 LM around the circuit. The no-commentary footage means you can indulge in the sound of its wonderful Colombo V12 engine. It’s just one of the cars in the Lavant Cup which, for 2023, is an all-Ferrari affair.
Next up, we have the moment Richard Bradley passed Jenson Button to take the lead of the Freddie March Memorial Trophy, the Formula 1 world champion succumbing to a misfire at the time. Another Button battle, later on in the video, is between the F1 star and seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson in the St. Mary’s Trophy practice session. The former is aboard an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Ti, the latter is getting to grips with an Austin A40 – a far cry from the much larger machines he’s used to wrestling around ovals.
A display of immense car control was put on by BTCC star Andrew Jordan at the wheel of his short wheelbase Porsche 911 in the Fordwater Trophy. The rear-engined sportscar has notoriously tricky handling on the limit, but you’d never guess from the measured, balletic and oh-so-neutral looking four-wheel drifts he executes around Goodwood’s high speed corners. There’s a similar display later in the video where the Porsche is replaced by a Jaguar C-type.
It’s rare these days for motorcycle and car racing to appear in the same meeting, and fans of motorcycle racing haven’t been forgotten in the highlights package. Seasoned racer Steve Brogan’s swift, assured two-wheel assault on the 2.3-mile circuit is just a hint of what’s to come in the annual Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy.
As part of the celebrations of 75th anniversary of Lotus, we ride aboard with Karun Chandock as he gets the JPS-liveried Type 79 off the line. The rear-facing camera brings us right into the cockpit, allowing us to see the concentration in his eyes as he lets out the clutch and brings in the throttle. If that’s not sensory enough, how about the rich sound of the BRM V16 that takes its place in the Goodwood Trophy.
Most of Friday is for practice, with just one race in the form of the Freddie March Memorial Trophy, so the event was only just getting into its stride and building anticipation for the Saturday and Sunday.
