We weren’t just revelling in memory this year though, we were making brand new ones courtesy of a wonderful battle for the lead between Andy Middlehurst’s Lotus 25 and Joe Colasacco’s Ferrari 1512. An initial red flag after oil was dropped onto the circuit saw the cars return to the grid for a second 15-minute sprint, and it was Mark Shaw in the Lotus 11 that built an early advantage at the front of the leading pack.
Colasacco found a sudden burst of speed with ten laps to go to overtake two cars in two laps, as the front five continued to dice. Just to see these stunning cars standing still would be enough to get our hearts racing, but to see them engaged in such enthralling wheel-to-wheel action is one of the many reasons why the Goodwood Revival is the greatest historic racing event in the world.
We won’t spoil the result, you have to watch the race for that, but we’ll say without argument that this race is well worth watching from start to finish.
