There’s no race quite like the Whitsun Trophy. Just the sound from a grid packed with sports prototypes built between 1960 and 1966 is enough to get the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. When they light up the rear tyres for the first assault into Madgwick, the noise is turned up to 11 and drama is dialled through the roof.
It was the McLaren M1B of James Davison that got the best start, the silver streak making a bid to the front that nobody else had an answer for. Battles throughout the field characterised the race, although a few pitstops for mechanical maladies interrupted proceedings for some drivers. A bit of suspected fluid on the track also created a few spills.
The biggest off was Julian Draper’s Lola T70, which clattered the tyre wall hard. That brought out a safety car while the tyres were reassembled and the stricken car was removed. Once the race resumed, it was James Davison again who capitalised on the restart. He cited his years of experience racing in America as his advantage on the rolling start, and he maintained his lead until the chequered flag.
