Friday may have been a thoroughly wet day here at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, but the first day of the 2024 Revival saw some thrilling track action, as Official Practices for each of the weekend’s races got underway.
The rain provided plenty of drama and gave drivers and riders the chance to show off their skills, some more tentative than others. We saw spins and slides, aquaplaning, and as a scattering of red flags can attest, a handful of incidents, too. We also witnessed some other-worldly displays of car control as the battle for respective pole positions played out. There was a drifting masterclass by Richard Woolmer in the Austin-Healey 3000 Mk1 in the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, as well as a stellar performance from Davey Todd to take pole position for the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy.
A step away from the racing, we also got a first look around the Earl's Court Motor Show, where the past meets the future head on, and celebrated some milestones in the automotive world with the first Meyers Manx track parade of the weekend, led by the Duke of Richmond and celebrating 60 years of the iconic beach buggy. Two other moments followed, as we had the first opportunities to honour John Surtees on the 60th anniversary of his Formula 1 world championship triumph, and 75 years of the legendary Jaguar XK engine.
And, as the rain finally ceased, Friday closed out with the first race of the Revival, the Sussex Trophy, which was won in dominant fashion by Andrew Smith and Oli Bryant in the Lotus-Climax 15. We can’t wait for what tomorrow brings when the racing kicks-off in full.
